I want to go to the gym, but I don’t want to get sick.

Fall has arrived! Wilting trees lining the streets introduce their reds, oranges and golds to the world and the smell of snow becomes all too familiar through out the short-lived days.

Fall also means cold and flu season. No matter what I do, I always get a cold at the beginning of the season. Luckily, I have been able to avoid the flu, but with many concerns around us this year, I don’t want to take the chance of getting something worse than the common head cold. And with avoiding catching anything greater than a head cold, it means staying out of the public eye.

Blisters, Burns and Sweat. Oh My!

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

We are undoubtedly having a heat wave this summer. The Pacific Northwest is seeing triple digits in a time where the likes of California and the Southern U.S. are in the lower 70’s. Recently, I took a trip to Las Vegas - where the heat is just an every day occurrance. You hear people saying, “drink lots and lots of water.” But there are some things they don’t tell you. The painful stories that they are either too embarrassed to share - or they want to secretly see you suffer like they did.

I am here to share with you the pain and suffering I went through, in hopes that you can take this in stride and do what’s best for you to enjoy the sweltering desert sun. Or in my case, the Pacific Northwest.

I’ve been scared into Yoga

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I’m beginning to think Women’s Health is going to be an unofficial, biweekly contributor to my posts. They have great articles and today, they seemed to be right up my alley.

I, like most of you sit at a desk all day, staring at a computer. Sometimes I forget that I haven’t moved in over 3 hours! I’ve been doing my best to consciously make an effort to stretch my legs out and roll my ankles around. Stretch my arms over my head and wiggle my fingers - scared that carpel tunnel syndrome will hit without warning. I keep a small glass of water next to me, so when it runs out (sooner than a large water bottle), I will walk to the faucet and refill. Sometimes, I will heat it in the microwave so I can do some leg stretches while waiting.

Today, I started to think about posture. I’ve noticed I hunch over my keyboard like nobodies business. You would think I can’t see my hands in front of my face the way I sit so close to the monitor.

I then saw this post by Women’s Health on twitter, “Yoga for Better Posture“. Reading through the poses, I have been scared into doing these exercises every day! I don’t want to end up with a hump. These aren’t poses you can do at your desk, but I will definitely try them in the morning, and probably after work to help relax after a stressful day.

I have also found this website: http://pjharrislmp.wordpress.com to be very helpful. In fact, the link provided goes right to some stretching exercises you can do at your desk.

I’ll let you guys know if I find anything else to help relieve pain from sitting down too long or what to do to keep your blood circulating if you are stuck in a seated position for longer than you wish.

Don’t forget to talk with your doctor before trying anything. You can diagnose yourself all you want, but they will be able to determine the real issues that are going on within your body.

Take care!
